If this single was your jam, then you’re in luck, because it’s part of Haitus Kaiyote’s new album, Choose Your Weapon, which dropped May 4, 2015. I’ve listened to this song every day for almost a month and I’m STILL finding new things I like about it. With each listen you uncover more and more of the hidden intricacies and artistry of the song, so it’s sure to be a tune you wont easily be bored by. If you listen closely enough, you can hear each of these styles outlined in various sections of the tune. The rest of the song takes you on a trip, highlighting various musical styles such as jazz, swing, and dance techno.

Then the main groove of the song starts, with Perrin Moss and his exceptional drumming providing the backbone. Their blend of complex rhythm and harmony is very well rehearsed, which allows Nai Palm to be as rhythmically expressive as she wants without sacrificing the integrity of the music. Before you know it, you’re lulled into a solid groove which is punctuated by a sweet chorale by Nai Palm, Hiatus Kaiyote’s lead vocalist and guitarist. After a few bars, the bass is introduced by Paul Bender, with sparse keyboard work by Simon Mavin creating a solid frame for the more nebulous intro. It starts out very ambient, without a definite beat. This tune develops much like many of their other songs. Their single ‘Shaolin Monk Motherfunk’ is a perfect example of what has become Kaiyote’s trademark. They have a very specific vision of how they want want to sound, and they execute it perfectly. Part funk, part R&B, part jazz, and influenced by a myriad of other genres and sounds, this band’s unique blend of influences creates an aesthetic that’s entirely their own.

They are a breath of fresh air breaking away from the monotony of simple song forms, and choosing to treat each of their songs as a musical journey or painting. Almost none of their songs follow the patterns we’re used to, ie: verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus. In fact, it’s not even a band you can easily describe. The biggest underground music show on the planet is coming to Melbourne this month with one big party curated by Hiatus Kaiyote. The answer? One mouthful at a time – isolate small sections of the line and practise slower than you think you need to until they become second nature and you’re not consciously thinking about the technique or the notes.Hiatus Kaiyote is not a band you can easily place in genre. So, how best to tackle this difficult line? The answer is the same as this often cited (and rather bizarre) question: ‘How do you eat an elephant?’ Ab Eb Fm Cm F C Gm Em Am G Chords for Hiatus Kaiyote - 09 Fingerprints with song key, BPM, capo transposer, play along with guitar, piano, ukulele & mandolin. Each stroke also requires a slightly different hand position, so changing between the two is physically demanding to coordinate at fast tempos.

However, in situations where double stops are required, it’s almost impossible to achieve the correct sound with rest strokes – your thumb is plucking the root note using a free stroke, so trying to make your fingers perform a rest stroke at the same time is somewhat brain-scrambling. Normally, I avoid free strokes because they result in what I’d term as homeopathic bass playing – since most of the energy is directed away from the bass it’s hard to achieve a solid tone and things end up sounding a bit weedy.

Free, or not to free? That is the question In order to properly execute this line and let the root note of the double stop ring out while articulating the melody we’re going to have to adopt free strokes with the plucking hand – this is where the fingers pluck upwards and away from the bass, as opposed to our normal rest strokes where the plucking fingers play into the bass and come to rest on a lower string.

Hiatus Kaiyote’s bass player Paul Bender casually matches the keyboard’s lines note for note for the entire song, throwing in double stops to provide a more detailed representation of the harmony (the double stops in question start off as major 7ths, with the last two bars using major 10ths to provide variation). Here’s how the main groove looks on paper: Writing out the whole tune was challenging, to say the least. A post shared by Tom Kenrick first encountered this tune as a commissioned transcription for a client (before you ask, I no longer undertake bespoke transcription work, sorry).
